Kids building software (@emmatracy)

I was smitten when my daughter told me she had an idea for a web application. We were at the book store and were talking about how expensive it can be to buy books. She thought it would be a great idea to create a website where her friends could list the books they each had and then setup book swaps. And poof! It was born...

Here are the mockups she drew today.

  1. Awesome! And I bet Emma's web app will be much more pleasant to use than the average library's website! Every time I visit my library's website, I wonder why it has to be so cumbersome and ugly...If I had a big bag of money, I'd give it to the library so they could hire someone to overhaul their online catalog and web presence. :-)But back to Emma's idea, have you thought about displaying book cover thumbnails?

  2. we have thought about it, but because anybody can put books on, it might be hard for them to get a picture

  3. I wonder if there's a way to make image pre-selection happen behind the scenes...maybe as part of the user's data entry process, have them enter the book's ISBN (the number on the barcode), and the app could pull a list of thumbnails from Google Image Search, and then the user could confirm that's the right picture. I just tried searching by a particular ISBN and the all of the results on the first 4 results pages were for the correct book. Maybe just grab the first 5 images? (Sorry, scope creep! Maybe for Release 2.0?) :-)

  4. good idea. i think version two will go off to amazon to fetch book details. this is a "startup weekend" (emphasis on weekend) so we're forcing manual entry. :)
